For use with your Nearby Naturals Oyster (gold or blue) Mushroom Kit!
Once you have successfully fruited your oyster mushroom block once or twice, its time to expand! (if you choose)
This kit will not work reliably with any of our other varieties. Oyster mushrooms are the favorite for these types of low tech cultivation as they are the most vigorous colonizers.
Each expansion kit comes with enough clean, pre-chopped wheat straw to make another 2 grow bags! We also include some extra log tubing just in case.
This kit is ideal for those who want to try their hand at low-tech cultivation but lack the space or desire to make a huge mess processing bales of straw.
1. Take your two bags of straw out of the bags by cutting off one of the knots. Steep in water at 175 degrees for one hour, drain/strain for 5 hours (straw should be moist but not wet, when you squeeze a handful no more than a few drops of water should come out). Let cool to room temperature.
2. With clean hands, crush up your "spent" oyster mushroom substrate and mix into the straw evenly. Stuff it back into the bags as tight as you can, tie the open end, and cut 5 one inch Xs.
3. Incubate between 65 and 75 degrees for 2-3 weeks.
4. Bring them into the light and fruit them again, just as before! Keep the fruiting holes moist and the blocks in a cool location (60-80 degrees).
This expansion kit can also be used without purchasing one of our "ready to fruit" oyster mushroom kits. If you have access to fresh oyster mushrooms you can use the leftover stems to create cardboard spawn and then use that to inoculate this straw substrate! Instructional videos to come.

This expansion kit works great. Be aware that you get tons of straw to use. You could honestly make at least for more bags of mycelium substrate. Anyway, sterilize it, incubate it, and soon enough you'll have new oysters.
