Dried Lobster Mushrooms

Lobster mushrooms (Hypomyces lactiflourum) are named both for their bright coloring and mild sea-food flavor that intensifies when the mushroom is dried. This mushroom doesn’t actually grow out of the ground as itself, as it is created when a parasitic fungus called Hypomyces hosts on Russula and Lactarius mushrooms. That’s part of the reason that Lobster Mushrooms are so rare, aside from only being found during certain seasons and in certain places. They cannot be reliably farmed.

Lobster mushrooms are prized not only for their sweet, nutty, sea-food flavor (reminiscent of real lobster) but also for their rich pigment, which can be used as a natural dye. These mushrooms are high in iron, copper, calcium, antioxidants, beta-glucans, and beneficial polysaccharides. Great, low-calorie way to add color and flavor to your meals.

Nearby Naturals dried Lobster mushrooms are harvested and dried here in the USA and shipped to your door. Each package comes with harvest/traceability info such as the identifier's name, batch number, the season of harvest, and more. A 2 oz bag of dried mushrooms equals just under 1.5 lbs of fresh mushrooms (as harvested).

There are no preservatives or additional ingredients, just 100% mushrooms.

Just soak your Lobsters in warm water to reconstitute. (You can save the water to use as dye for art projects!) They can be sauteed and eaten on their own or as a welcome ingredient in a number of dishes.
